Our Story

Park Heights, a historic neighborhood in Northwest Baltimore, reflects the journey of many American urban communities—rich in cultural legacy, shaped by migration, and deeply impacted by broader social and economic shifts. Once a vital transportation hub, Park Heights grew alongside Baltimore’s development, with Reisterstown Road serving as a major artery for goods moving from rural farmlands to the city’s port in the 19th century. By the early 20th century, annexation and the rise of the streetcar transformed Park Heights into a bustling “streetcar suburb,” lined with walkable residential streets, thriving local businesses, and cultural destinations like the Pimlico Race Course.

Throughout the 20th century, Park Heights evolved from a Jewish immigrant enclave to a predominantly African American community. However, the neighborhood also faced disinvestment, population shifts, and systemic challenges that mirrored broader national trends of urban decline.

Today, Park Heights is experiencing a powerful resurgence through the leadership of Park Heights Renaissance (PHR). Founded in 2008, to guide the equitable redevelopment of Park Heights, PHR is spearheading transformational efforts that prioritize revitalization without displacement. With community-rooted strategies focused on affordable housing, workforce development, commercial reinvestment, and public safety, PHR is helping to restore the promise of Park Heights as a safe, thriving, and vibrant place to live.

From securing major funding for redevelopment projects to launching initiatives that celebrate local culture and uplift neighborhood pride, Park Heights Renaissance is writing a new chapter—one that honors the past while boldly investing in the future.
