The George E. Mitchell Annual Fellowship Grant
George E. Mitchell was a community leader and activist who worked tirelessly to support the residents of the Park Heights community. He dedicated his life to loving and helping people, but always displayed a special love for the youth and for community pride. He believed in community responsibility and that everyone plays a role in building and sustaining a healthy and safe community. His leadership and passion will be missed by so many for years to come.
We honor his legacy and his work through this fellowship that supports enthusiastic and innovative community leaders, organizations, partnerships, and social justice entrepreneurs implementing impactful projects that address social or economic challenges in the Park Heights community.
Fellowship Priority Areas: The goal of the fellowship is to inspire leaders and residents of Park Heights to implement creative community service projects that strengthen and develop community leaders, encourage community unity, and support social enterprises that increase opportunities and improve the quality of life for the residents of Park Heights. The Fellowship supports projects that address priority areas of the Park Heights Master Plan, Including:
- Youth Engagement & Safety
- Community Leadership and Training
- Reentry/ Returning Citizens
- Social Enterprise (A social enterprise refers to a business with any of the priority objectives of the grant as its primary goal or mission and is focused on strong community impact that maximizes their profit to, in turn, use those profits to fund their social or community programs.)
- Food Access Solutions
- Workforce Development and Skills Training
- Affordable Housing and Housing Opportunities for Vulnerable Populations, including returning citizens, unhoused residents, youth timed out of foster care, seniors, veterans, or individuals with disabilities.
- Social Determinants of Health (Community Wellness, Access to Healthcare, Addiction, and Health Equity)
Eligibility: George Mitchell Annual Fellowship Grantee must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be Park Heights Community resident or involved in the community for at least five years.
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a member of or have sponsorship from a 501c(3) organization in good standing with the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation at the time of application.
- Demonstrated support and track record of community commitment
Technical Assistance and Support
PHR will provide technical assistance and support to the fellow to ensure the success of their project. Technical assistance may include serving as a fiscal agent, application assistance, marketing and promotion, access to administrative supplies and equipment (copier, fax, website postings, social media announcements, etc.).
