Horse racing’s place in Maryland history is set to continue after Gov. Wes Moore moved to purchase and take full ownership of the Preakness Stakes.
Moore acquired the rights from Churchill Downs for $85 million. In announcing the deal, Moore said, “The Preakness Stakes is more than just a race: it is a cornerstone of Maryland’s history, culture, and economy.”
The move raises questions about what full state ownership could mean for the future of the Preakness and for horse racing fans in Maryland.
